The Tale of a Toilet Snake
Once we found a rather healthy midland water snake curled up in our toilet.
My husband and I were out with the dogs when we got a text from your youngest, Anna. “There’s a snake in the toilet!”
I asked Anna to send a picture and even I was a little taken aback not only by its size but by how easily it seemed to nestle in the bowl, as if it found our potty comfortable. Not so our youngest.
“Ugh! I feel so uncomfortable!” she texted.
When we got home, we immediately went to check out our visitor, and sure enough, there she was, a healthy and feisty water snake. I sent the picture to the experts on the Facebook group, “Alabama Reptile and Amphibian ID and Education” for some advice.
The first order of business was to identify the snake, which was quickly identified as a non-venomous midland water snake. Satisfied with their assessment and my own, I asked for removal advice.
Some of the suggestions were to dangle a fish on a stick, fashion a noose, grab her with salad tongs (which was my first thought, and which I attempted with near success), remove the toilet, and one of my favorites, fill the tub with water in hopes that she would simply relocate.
And then came the details.
